UMK Shines at Northern Cape Mine Managers SHE Day
In the Northern Cape, the mining community recently gathered for the annual Northern Cape Mine Managers Association (NCMMA) SHE Day competition, held at the Petra Diamonds sports ground in Lime Acres. The event brought together professionals from mining organisations across the region, competing in challenges focused on Safety, Health, and the Environment (SHE) within the industry.
UMK participated in four of the seven competition categories: SHE Representatives, Environment, Women in Mining (WIM), and Forklift, achieving exceptional results that demonstrated our commitment to excellence and our core values of Collaboration, Empowerment, Sustainability, and Integrity. The team was led by Chief Safety Officer Tumisang Totong, with strong support from management and backing by the CEO, reinforcing our collective drive for success.
The Women in Mining (WIM) segment, chaired by UMK’s Nthabiseng Liphalane, featured 4 participants who showcased industry-standard personal protective equipment (PPE). This segment included individual interviews and on-stage questions, with judging criteria covering talent, confidence, and stage presence. UMK was represented by four contestants in the WIM category. Nkgodisheng Kenana was crowned “Face of PPE,” and Thandiwe Ntaolang, came 3rd place and won the “Ms. Personality”.

In the Environment category, UMK fielded representatives, focused on sustainable practices within mining operations. The SHE Representatives demonstrated their commitment to crucial health and safety standards in mining.
The Forklift category saw two representatives from UMK Stores competing in a challenging course designed to test precision and control. UMK’s Neo Mothibedi achieved a remarkable second place in the Forklift category, demonstrating the technical skill and precision.
SHE Day also offered stalls, exhibitions, and a Potjie Kos cooking contest, inviting industry members to take part as both competitors and supporters.
Through this event, we are reminded of our collective achievements and the tremendous potential within each UMK team member . Participants and attendees also reflected on the shared standards and dedication that the Northern Cape mining community upholds through initiatives such as SHE Day, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to excellence in SHE practices.
