UMK Invests in Generation Next

United Manganese of Kalahari (UMK) recently handed over the newly constructed Tshwaraganang Early Childhood Development Centre in Cardington Village outside Kuruman. The centre was donated to the local municipality, Joe Morolong, and the Northern Cape Department of Education through the mine’s Social and Labour Plan (SLP).

The handover marked another completed project and an ongoing commitment to community development within the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality.

UMK’s Lance Auckett said the project was a proud moment for the company and the community. “It’s a proud day for UMK to be part of this, through our values, collaboration being one of them, working with local government, the municipality and other stakeholders to build facilities where they are needed most in communities,” he said.

Auckett said the Tshwaraganang ECD Centre will provide a safe and stimulating learning environment for children from Cardington and nearby villages. “For UMK, the project represents an investment in the next generation of leaders, scientists, miners and innovators who will shape the region’s future,” he said. “Early childhood development is very close to our hearts. These are the leaders of tomorrow, and we’re proud to help lay the foundation for our children not just to be nourished but to receive a quality education. It’s about giving them the tools to dream bigger than their circumstances.”

Inside, colourful classrooms and play areas have been designed to nurture learning, creativity and confidence. The centre also offers early learning resources, a fully equipped playground and a secure environment for children whose parents often travel long distances for work.

Terence Mamabolo, UMK’s Socio-Economic Development Manager, said the company views early learning as a vital component of its social investment strategy. “Early childhood development is where opportunity begins,” he said. “By investing in facilities like Tshwaraganang, we’re not just supporting education but helping to create self-reliant, confident young people who will one day uplift their communities.”

Mamabolo added that the centre’s impact extends well beyond the classroom. “When we strengthen education at this level, we’re building a foundation that supports families, creates jobs and inspires long-term growth,” he said. “It’s about ensuring that development is sustainable, that it lives on in the hearts and minds of the next generation.”

The handover event drew community members, the local tribal authorities, municipal officials and UMK representatives. Auckett said sustainability remains central to UMK’s approach. “We want to leave something meaningful behind,” he said. “This centre is not just about today. It’s about the future. Our next geologists, miners and engineers may very well come from the Kuruman community because of initiatives like this.”
